Last updated 13 October 2026. GeoBarkr is a Street View guessing game at gabarker.com/geobarkr, run by George Barker (“I”, “me”), who is responsible for your data. Questions or requests: info@bearings.quest.
What I collect
Your account
- Your display name, and a profile photo if you sign in with Google.
- How you sign in: if you use Google, the details Google shares (see Signing in with Google); if you use a password, your email address and the password (stored only as a secure hash by our sign-in provider, never readable by me).
Your games
- The games you create or join: the game type, the map, the room code, who played and when.
- Each guess: where you put your pin, the distance from the real place, your score and how long you took.
Maps you make
- The map's name, description and settings, and its five places: where each one is, its name and, for Street View maps, the starting view.
- For photo maps, the photos you upload. Your browser reads where a photo was taken (if the photo says) to place it on the map for you, then makes a smaller copy without any of the photo's hidden details (location, camera, date) and uploads only that copy. Photos are stored with a random file name that anyone with the link can open, so don't upload anything private.
On your device
Your browser keeps you signed in using its local storage. GeoBarkr uses no advertising or tracking cookies and no analytics.
Signing in with Google
This section explains exactly how GeoBarkr handles the Google user data it receives when you choose “Continue with Google”.
What Google data GeoBarkr accesses
Only your basic Google profile: your name, your email address and your profile photo. GeoBarkr does not request, and cannot see, your contacts, Gmail, Drive, calendar, location or any other Google data.
How GeoBarkr uses it
- Your email address: to create your GeoBarkr account, sign you in, and contact you about your account (for example, if you ask for it to be deleted).
- Your name: as your starting display name, which you can change in My games.
- Your profile photo: as your picture on the map and in player lists. To have it removed, email me.
It is used for nothing else: never for advertising, never sold, never used to build databases about you, and never used to develop, improve or train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models.
Who it's shared with
Google user data is not sold, transferred or disclosed to any third party, except to the service providers that run GeoBarkr on my behalf and only to provide it: Supabase (account sign-in and database) and GitHub Pages (website hosting). Your email address is never shown to other players. Your display name and profile photo are shown to other players as described under “Who can see it”. I would only disclose data if required by law.
How it's protected
All data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and is stored encrypted by Supabase. Database rules mean only you can change your own account, and only I can access the database. Passwords are never stored in readable form.
How long it's kept, and deleting it
Your Google details are kept only while you have a GeoBarkr account. To delete your account, email info@bearings.quest; your account and all its data, including your Google details, are deleted within 30 days. You can also remove GeoBarkr's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/connections.
Limited Use
GeoBarkr's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Who can see it
- Players in a game with you: your display name and profile photo, and once each round ends, your guess, distance and score for that game.
- Signed-in players: your display name, profile photo, total points and best game on the all-time leaderboard.
- Anyone signed in: the name and description of your public maps, and that you made them. Players see a map's photos or Street View during a game on it, and its places once each round ends.
- Only you: your email address, your list of games, your private maps, and where your maps' places are before they're played.
- I can see all of the above to run and fix the game.
Why I use it
To run the game and the features you use (games with friends, your history and the leaderboard). The legal basis is providing the service you ask for and my legitimate interest in running and improving it. I don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
Services involved
- Supabase: database, sign-in and live game updates. Data may be stored outside the UK, with standard safeguards.
- Google Maps and Street View: the map and Street View are loaded from Google in your browser, so Google receives your IP address and how you use the map, under the Google Privacy Policy. When you make a map, the place names you search for, and the places you choose, are sent to Google to find them and name them.
- Google sign-in: only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- GitHub Pages: hosts the website.
- Google Fonts: your browser loads the font from Google, so it receives your IP address as part of a normal web request.
How long it's kept
Account and game data is kept until you ask for your account to be deleted, and is then deleted within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your profile and your guesses, and games you created are deleted along with everyone's results in them, as are maps you made. Deleting a map yourself removes it and any photos no finished game still shows. Data on your device stays until you sign out or clear your browser's storage.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, or object to how it's used. To delete your account and everything linked to it, email info@bearings.quest from your account's email address; I'll do it within 30 days. If you're unhappy with how your data is handled you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
GeoBarkr accounts are for people aged 13 and over.
